After avian influenza spread in northern Germany for several weeks, it has now also been detected in a poultry population in Saxony. Around 9,000 geese are affected.

meIn Saxony, the first case of avian influenza has been confirmed in a company. A poultry farm in the Leipzig district is affected. “All animal owners must now adhere to the regulations issued to prevent the spread of the pest of birds,” Saxony Health Minister Petra Köpping (SPD) said on Friday. “It is very challenging that after the corona pandemic and African swine fever, we are now facing the third avian influenza crisis.”

According to the Ministry of Health, the veterinary authorities immediately blocked the animal population. The killing and elimination of the animals began, he said. About 9,000 geese were affected by the outbreak, the district announced Friday night.

Avian influenza has been found in northern Germany for several weeks not only in wild birds but also in numerous livestock populations. In Saxony, only one wild bird in the northern district of Saxony had so far tested positive.
