After the fire of the museum ship “Friederike von Papenburg”, the police confiscated the fire site. It is not yet clear what caused the fire.
“The investigation is just beginning,” a police spokeswoman said Sunday afternoon when asked by NDR.de. Officials had made a first impression on Saturday, but it was still too early to give concrete information on the extent of the damage. “Since it is a museum ship, it is much more difficult to estimate than, for example, a car,” the spokeswoman said. No information on the possible cause could yet be released.
Very damaged ship
A spokesman for the fire department told NDR.de that most of the interior of the ship had been destroyed. The front is completely burned. There is also a room that the Papenburg city registry office uses as a wedding hall. According to the police, the fire broke out there. The interior area certainly needs to be completely renovated, the fire department spokesman said. However, there was no risk of the ship sinking because the brig is attached to a concrete slab underwater. People were not injured in the fire.
The mayor awaits repairs
Papenburg Mayor Jan Peter Bechtluft (CDU) said he hoped the ship could be repaired again. The brig is part of the maritime adventure world that the city is currently building and one of the city’s most important landmarks.
About 100 firefighters in action
A passerby had noticed the fire on Saturday around 7.30am and alerted emergency services. By the time the fire department arrived, dense smoke was already rising from inside the ship. Around 100 firefighters from Obenende, Unterende and Aschendorf quickly brought the fire under control. At 9:30 am, emergency services could report: Fire.
Police: No more ships in distress
The wooden sailboat is located some distance between the town hall and a hotel. Both were closed when the fire broke out, apparently no other person was at risk, reports NDR 1 Lower Saxony. An evacuation of the area was not necessary despite the heavy smoke, firefighters and police decided. Since there are no other ships in the immediate vicinity of the “Friederike von Papenburg”, there was no risk of the fire spreading.
