In Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler there was a major fire service on Tuesday evening. The fire in an intermediate building between the thermal baths and the sanatorium has already been extinguished.
Police said there is a construction site for a wellness area there. The intermediate building is in danger of collapsing. All fire brigades in the area were involved, he said.
Due to the dense smoke that formed, parts of the adjacent sanitarium also had to be evacuated. One person was admitted to the hospital with suspected smoke inhalation. Property damage is estimated at a high six figure amount.
Hotel guests had to be evacuated
According to the operator, the neighboring hotel Steigenberger was not directly affected. However, smoke entered the building. The fire brigade had to take many hotel guests to safety, says Ahrweiler district fire brigade inspector Michael Zimmermann. Four of them suffered minor injuries. Residents must continue to keep windows and doors closed due to smoke and odor nuisances.
