FC Bayern Munich: Kimmich operated successfully

Bad news for Bayern Munich: Germany’s record champions have to do without midfielder Joshua Kimmich for several weeks. In principle, the Munich team has ruled out a return in 2020.

On Sunday, around 24 hours after the main game against BVB, Joshua Kimmich had a successful operation on his right lateral meniscus. FC Bayern announced it in the evening.

The medical department of the record champion assumes “that the midfielder will be available again in January,” read the official announcement of the Munich team, which ruled out a return to the field in 2020.

The national player will miss his team in at least ten competitive matches. If Kimmich were not yet operational in early January, more would be added.

“We are happy that Joshua will probably be available to us again in a few weeks. We will give him the best possible support in his rehabilitation,” said sports director Hasan Salihamidzic, who was relieved that the worst predictions did not come true.

Before the final diagnosis, there was also a brief speculation about a cruciate ligament tear. In the worst case, this would have cost Kimmich the rest of the season and possibly also participation in the final of the European Championship in 2021.

The “Bild” had previously announced that Kimmich would have an examination by knee specialist Dr. Christian Fink in Innsbruck. Obviously that was not necessary.

“He is in this position with our key player. It would not be easy for us to deal with such a failure,” said coach Hansi Flick, already after the 3-2 win against BVB, how difficult a failure would be for Kimmich.
