After the fatal accident with a concrete slab of a soundproofing wall on the A3 near Cologne, Straßen.NRW assumes a “defect caused on purpose”. During the 2007 assembly, the plate was not placed correctly due to lack of space, the state-owned company announced on Tuesday after the first investigations.

The concrete slab fell on Friday on the car of a 66-year-old Cologne woman who died at the scene of the accident. The Prosecutor’s Office has initiated a process for negligent homicide against unknown persons.

An expert commissioned by the prosecutor discovered at least one more part at risk of falling. According to information from the news agency dpa, in its preliminary report it documented an already bent welded joint with increased risk of cracking in a neighboring concrete slab. The expert recommended that the hazardous components be removed as soon as possible and kept as evidence.

In his preliminary report, the engineer found that some concrete slabs were properly installed around the crash site and others, including the one that had crashed, were not. According to the expert, the crashed concrete slab weighed about 6.2 tons. In addition to a broken screw, the assessor found a washer that was clearly too small.
