Fat of the crisis: the risky consequences of the crown measures

Don’t go out, limit contacts, work in your home office: measures designed to prevent the rapid spread of the coronavirus are already leaving their mark on the population. This was the result of a representative poll that the YouGov opinion poll commissioned by the German Press Agency (dpa) carried out between April 22 and 24, 2020 with 2,041 participants over 18 years of age. Therefore, 38 percent of adults in Germany have moved less since the initial restrictions than before, 19 percent have gained weight since then. Only twelve percent of respondents said they had moved more than before, eight percent had even lost weight due to the measures. Experts strongly warn against the consequences of weight gain and lack of exercise, which could occur due to mobility restrictions in the wake of the crown crisis.

More diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

“Lack of exercise not only promotes the development of overweight, but also reduces fitness, coordination and mobility,” said Heidrun Thaiss, head of the Federal Center for Health Education (BZgA), in a message that the dpa has published based on the survey. “Furthermore, the psyche also suffers from lack of movement.” If the limit of a body mass index above 25 is exceeded, the risk of diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular or joint diseases increases with increasing body fat. “The older a person is, the harder it is to lose weight in the medium term.”

Consequences of the crown crisis: more time for healthy meals

But despite numerous restrictions, the survey also revealed positive effects of the crown crisis. For example, many families have had more time for their daily meals since the Corona crisis, and some even discover the cook himself in front of closed restaurants: bread is baking, Internet recipes are booming. After all, twelve percent of respondents stated that they had been eating healthier since the crisis, and only 13 percent were eating healthier despite the restrictions.

There are no health gurus: flour and pasta instead of diets

Another aspect is that phenomena like low carbohydrate hype have decreased, says Uwe Knop, nutritionist and author. “All these health gurus and diet nonsense are a pure phenomenon of prosperity.” During the crisis, the Germans bought pasta and flour.

Candy sales increased sharply in the Corona crisis

In the YouGov survey, only 15 percent of respondents stated that they had been eating more than before the restrictions. Eleven percent even thought they had been eating less since the crown closed. However, according to the dpa, this is probably a misjudgment: according to the international confectionery association, confectionery sales have increased significantly in the crown crisis, and a double-digit increase was registered in March.

Germans on the move since the Corona crisis

Digital media has boomed since the Corona crisis. The survey also confirms this trend: 39 percent of respondents stated that they spend more free time with TV, PC, laptop, game console, smartphone, and the like. Only 4 percent sit less in front of the screen in the Corona course. Surprisingly, nearly a third of respondents (31 percent) stated that they now spend less time talking to friends or family over the phone or video. However, almost a quarter (23 percent) of respondents said they are doing more now than before the crisis.
