In France, the coronavirus continues to spread at high speed. In one day, authorities posted a new record with a good 7,400 new cases. Due to the location, masks are now mandatory throughout the city of Paris.
The number of new corona infections in France continues to rise rapidly: the health authority reported almost 7,400 new infections in 24 hours. It is an “exponential growth”. On Thursday the number of new infections was around 6,100, on Wednesday 5,400.
It is the highest number of new infections confirmed in one day since the introduction of large-scale corona tests in France. Almost 900,000 tests have been carried out in the country in the last seven days. The proportion of positive tests during this time was 3.9 percent.
With more than 30,500 deaths, France is one of the countries hardest hit by the corona pandemic in Europe. Meanwhile, 21 of the approximately 100 French administrative districts are considered “red zones” where the virus is actively circulating. In addition to the Paris metropolitan area, these include much of the Mediterranean coast. The Berlin Foreign Ministry currently advises against “unnecessary tourist trips” to the Paris area, the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region in southern France and the overseas territory of French Guiana due to the high number of infections.
Due to the high number of new infections in Paris, masking has been mandatory throughout the city since morning. Pedestrians in the French capital and the three surrounding administrative districts are encouraged to wear mouth and nose protection outdoors. Cyclists and runners, on the other hand, are exempted from the obligation, as announced by the police prefecture. Violations can result in a fine of 135 euros. French Prime Minister Jean Castex announced the new rule on Thursday.
In other large cities such as Nice, Marseille and Toulouse, the mask is already mandatory throughout the city. In Paris, before the protection of the mouth and nose was only mandatory in tourist areas and other especially lively areas, such as the surroundings of the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe, which turns the city into a patchwork quilt. In the department of Bas-Rhin, on the border with Germany, outdoor masks are mandatory from Saturday in communities with more than 10,000 inhabitants. Strasbourg, Hagenau and Bischwiller and Oberehnheim, among others, are affected.
