The university’s examination board used research from the online platform Vroniplag as the basis for its report, in which plagiarism hunters check dissertations for scientific correctness. Vroniplag had found 119 objectionable passages in Giffey’s 205-page dissertation. The platform was created after plagiarism hunters found significant shortcomings in the work of former Defense Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg and had to give up his doctorate.
It is clear from the document that Giffey has deliberately misled at least 27 passages of text: five times in the work, Giffey took complete sentences from other works without marking them as quotes and naming the source. In another 22 places, “plain text adaptations or paraphrases were identified for which no source was mentioned,” the report says.
