205 pages, at least 27 plagiarism: A previously secret report from the Free University of Berlin now shows for the first time how Family Minister Franziska Giffey misled in her dissertation The students are outraged.

Fooled at least 27 times, and still got his way with a reprimand: In the case of the controversial doctoral thesis of Family Minister Franziska Giffey, an expert report from the Free University of Berlin (FU), which was initially kept under lock and key, reveals the true extent of the SPD politician’s deception. And it brings college students back to demand the revocation of Giffey’s doctorate.

In October last year, the FU criticized Giffey after a thorough examination of his doctoral thesis, but refrained from withdrawing his doctorate, “because the core of the work and its scientific performance are not questioned by the shortcomings,” said the FU . Instead, the university issued a reprimand. The explosive: The Berlin University Law does not actually recognize this form of sanction and is now also the subject of a legal review.

Fact of deception objective accomplished

At the time, the university did not provide details of objectionable passages from Giffey’s work. The General Student Committee (AStA) of the FU has taken up this and presented the previously secret document to the public. The 13-page report was also published on “Ask the State.”

The university’s examination board used research from the online platform Vroniplag as the basis for its report, in which plagiarism hunters check dissertations for scientific correctness. Vroniplag had found 119 objectionable passages in Giffey’s 205-page dissertation. The platform was created after plagiarism hunters found significant shortcomings in the work of former Defense Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg and had to give up his doctorate.

It is clear from the document that Giffey has deliberately misled at least 27 passages of text: five times in the work, Giffey took complete sentences from other works without marking them as quotes and naming the source. In another 22 places, “plain text adaptations or paraphrases were identified for which no source was mentioned,” the report says. In these passages “the fact of objective deception” is fulfilled, the university examiners continued. The report also lists 29 other minor defects. Appointments were given late or minor literal acquisitions were tried. For college trifles.

Bankruptcy filing of the Berlin Scientific Location

“Students fail the exams because they missed two appointments,” says Anna Müller, AStA consultant at FU. Other politicians would have had to give up their doctorate for significantly less violent crimes. “We don’t see any proportionality here, but rather the political calculation of the FU leadership,” Müller continued. Family Minister Giffey is running for the Berlin Senate and wants to become the ruling mayor of the federal capital in 2021.

AStA repeated its demands since the fall and wants the University of Giffey to withdraw its doctorate: “If Giffey not only assumed the position of mayor from Michael Müller, but also that of senator for science, it would be a bankruptcy for Berlin as headquarters scientific “.

Giffey received his PhD from the FU in 2010. His work was on the theme “Europe’s path to becoming a citizen” and was rated magna cum laude, meaning “very good”.
