The number of infections skyrockets in Germany. And Chancellor Angela Merkel (66, CDU) is worried.
“If the trend continues like this, we will have 19,200 infections a day. It’s like in other countries, ”Merkel said after the information from the BILD in a videoconference of the CDU presidium.
▶ ︎ For comparison: At the end of March, there were around 6,000 new infections per day in Germany.
When asked how the chancellor got this number, her spokesperson, Steffen Seibert, said after the meeting that she could not comment on the “statement that was allegedly made in internal circles.”
Merkel made it clear once again in the group: “We have to contain the infection process quickly and intervene. We have to set priorities: keep the economy running, keep schools and daycare centers open. Soccer is secondary here. ”
The Chancellor also views parties, restaurant visits, and religious events as problematic.
“What leaves me lost is that things are exploding in the countries around us,” Merkel said. The infection figures in Europe are worrying. Everything must be done in Germany so that the numbers do not continue to grow exponentially.
Regional solutions needed again
During the video change, the Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, Armin Laschet (CDU) and the head of state of Hesse, Volker Bouffier (CDU), spoke in favor of finding regional solutions again.
Laschet: “We need differentiated answers again.” At NRW the rules for private events are now stricter.
Neither Bouffier nor Laschet assume there will be a general lockdown again.
