EU Commissioner criticizes France for truck jams

EU Transport Commissioner Adina Valean has blamed France for the truck chaos in south-east England. “I condemn that France has gone against our recommendations and has returned us to the situation we were in in March, when the supply chains were broken,” Valean tweeted Thursday night.

Due to the rapid spread of the new Corona variant in Britain, France had closed the borders and only reopened them on Wednesday evening. Because truck drivers now have to submit a negative corona test to enter France, it will still be days before the backlog of several thousand vehicles is reduced.

Praise the UK for the rapid tests

According to Valean, a total of about 10,000 truckers from Great Britain are trying to return to continental Europe. More than thousands are already in the area of the coastal city of Dover in southern England, the EU commissioner wrote on Twitter. Hundreds of German drivers are also said to be among those stranded.

Valean praised the British side. Authorities would test 300 drivers per hour. “I am pleased that trucks are slowly crossing the English Channel right now.” The Commissioner called on EU member states to relax rest periods and lift bans on driving during holidays so that drivers can return to their families in time for Christmas.
