The average state commission is looking at the images that were released Monday, commission deputy director general Jonas Bäckstrand told the dpa news agency on Wednesday. Speculation about a collision with a submarine.

The sinking of the ferry is considered the worst maritime disaster in Europe after World War II. The “Estonia” sank on the night of September 28, 1994 with 989 people on board on its way from Tallinn to Stockholm off the southern coast of Finland. 852 people died. According to the official investigation report of 1997, the torn bow visor was the cause of the sinking.

However, speculation continues to this day about the cause of the accident. Survivors and mourners have long called for the investigations to be resumed. Former Estonian prosecutor and “Estonian” investigator Margus Kurm had last said in an interview that the new information indicated that the ferry was likely sunk as a result of a collision with a submarine.

The director of the documentary series and another member of the television team now have to answer in court for disturbing the peace of the dead. The two faced up to two years in prison, reports the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”.
