A ship collided with a bridge over the Dortmund-Ems canal in the Emsland district. Part of the bridge collapsed during the collision. No one was injured.

A cargo ship rammed a bridge over the Dortmund-Ems Canal and downed it. The channel was closed, police in Lingen, Lower Saxony said Monday. According to initial estimates, the financial damage is in the millions.

Consequently, an inland waterway vessel recorded a smaller single-lane road bridge on Monday at the Emsbüren municipality level. The unloaded freighter rammed the center section with its bow and pulled it out of its anchorage, whereupon the bridge element sank into the channel.

According to initial police investigations, the ship apparently had too little ballast water in its tanks, so it protruded too far from the water. The crew itself reported to the police. When the channel will be navigable again was not clear.
