Emergency rescue: Italy arrests rescue ship “Alan Kurdi” again

The Italian authorities have again arrested the German private rescue ship “Alan Kurdi” in a port. As reported by the coast guard on Friday evening, the ship of the maritime rescue organization Sea-Eye can no longer leave the port of Olbia in Sardinia. During technical checks, “irregularities” were found that could endanger the safety of the crew and migrants of the ships on board, explained the Italian coast guard. “The renewed determination is purely politically motivated and endangers human life,” said Gorden Isler, President of Sea-Eye. Regensburg-based operators would file a lawsuit, he announced.

The “Alan Kurdi” had already been detained in the port on a previous Mediterranean mission in May in Palermo, Sicily. At the time, similar points were criticized and a trip to a shipyard in Spain was allowed, the coast guard wrote. “We discovered today that these irregularities have not been remedied.” Isler explained that the Spanish and German specialized authorities had confirmed that it was free of defects.

In the tug of war between rescuers and Italian authorities, the country has repeatedly withdrawn the ships from service. Organizations always complain that technical reasons have been exposed. Basically, the government of Rome just a few days ago disabled anti-migration laws and reduced fines for maritime rescuers who enter ports without permission.

At the end of September, the “Alan Kurdi” brought 125 migrants to the port of Olbia with official authorization. Many refugees begin their dangerous voyages in small boats across the Mediterranean to Europe from Libya and Tunisia.
