Halvor Egner Granerud celebrates his second win of the season at Nizhny Tagil. Less than a week after his first win, the Norwegian benefits from the bad luck of Markus Eisenbichler, who has no chance in the final round.

With jumps at 132.5 and 132 meters, Halvor Egner Granerud secured victory in the first of two individual competitions this weekend. The Norwegian scored a total of 270 points on Friday afternoon in Nizhny Tagil, Russia, and thus beat Austrian Daniel Huber, who achieved 131 and 133 meters (255.7 pts). Third place went to Robert Johansson (120.5 and 142.5 m; 254.1 p.) After a brilliant comeback.

After the first round, it looked like Markus Eisenbichler could win the third time of the season. The Siegsdorf man led the pack with the best distance of 136.5 meters at halftime, clearly ahead of Granerud, but was unlucky in the final round: after the jump, a gust of wind caught the Siegsdorf man who only he was able to avoid a fall with difficulty. In the end, the 29-year-old was only 28. “What the fuck,” the disappointed Eisenbichler yelled at the television cameras.

From 25 to podium: Johansson’s incredible run to catch up

It was the other direction for Johansson: in difficult and changing conditions, the Norwegian was clearly behind in 25th place after the first round, but then catapulted to the podium in the final with a new hill record of 142.5 meters. “Of course, after the first round, I didn’t think it would end like this,” explained Johansson.

The 30-year-old had luck on his side and benefited from a strong updraft on his flight. In fact, it was the first competition this season that was clearly influenced by external conditions. “It was a difficult competition, the wind changed more than yesterday. But that’s how it works sometimes, ”the victorious Granerud said afterward.

Light and shade with the German ski jumpers

The German team revealed more weaknesses a week before the World Ski Flight Championship in Planica. Andreas Wellinger missed the goal given by national coach Stefan Horngacher to score for the first time this season: At 118 meters and 40th place, the Olympic champion missed the second round for the fourth time, as did his teammates Constantin Schmid ( 38th) and Severin Freund (39th).

However, things went much better for Pius Paschke, who achieved the best result of his career so far with fifth place behind the surprisingly strong Austrian Thomas Lackner (fourth). So did 23-year-old Martin Hamann, who finished 11th with two 123.5-meter jumps.

Klimov in the Top Ten

Before empty spectators, a Russian ski jumper landed in the top ten: Evgeniy Klimov achieved his best result of the season with seventh place behind Aleksander Zniszczol of Poland (6th). Yukiya Sato of Japan (8th) and Anze Lanisek of Slovenia (9th) also landed in the top ten.

Ryoyu Kobayashi from Japan also registered a clear upward trend, who with twelfth place can gradually reconnect with the best in the world.

With only 48 athletes, Saturday’s starting field was manageable; In addition to Austria’s best ski jumpers and the Czech team, which are canceled due to the crown, the best Polish ski jumpers around Dawid Kubacki and Kamil Stoch did not travel to Russia. Despite the comparatively small group, the Swiss Simon Ammann (35th) and Peter Prevc of Slovenia (36th), other outstanding athletes, failed to score points at the World Cup.

Granerud conquers the yellow jersey

With a total of 300 points, Granerud has now taken the overall lead in the World Cup from Eisenbichler, who has dropped to second place with 283 points. The third is Sato (163).
