A day after the new resolutions of the Crown, numerous leaders of countries defended the “Easter peace” agreed. Saxony Prime Minister Kretschmer also lowered hopes of a turnaround like a year ago.

Saxony Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer hopes that the tighter lockdown during Easter will slow the spread of the corona virus and its mutants. However, the CDU politician does not expect the same positive effect as after the lockdown in the spring of last year: the lockdown at that time was “much longer and much more consistent.” “Then he brought us a summer that was very free. We cannot wait for this development now,” Kretschmer said at the daily topics.

However, the harsh five-day Easter lockdown is “actively reacting to a development that is currently taking place.” The decision is “absolutely unpopular”, but an attempt to counter the huge increase in the number of infections in Germany. “We must not be careless now, this viral disease will not forgive us,” Kretschmer said.

At the same time, the prime minister raised hope that things will relax after the holidays: “I think certain things should be possible again after Easter: a visit to the zoo, for example, with a negative corona test or certain shopping areas “. they are still closed today with a negative Corona test. ”

Contacts and mobility will be reduced.

The “Easter peace” agreed upon by the federal and state governments was also championed by Thuringian Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow. The “present danger” must be avoided in view of the “abrupt” increase in the number of infections, he demanded. In the five days from Holy Thursday to Easter Monday “everything must be avoided”, this affects all companies, all production plants, all social life, including large events.

The head of state of Rhineland-Palatinate, Malu Dreyer, and the Prime Minister of Lower Saxony, Stephan Weil, expressed a similar opinion. Contacts and mobility should “be drastically reduced” with the closure of shops and businesses during Easter, Dreyer warned. Weil appealed to citizens to adhere to the strict blockade. “Please let us take this approach together,” said the SPD politician. “Please refrain from direct encounters during Easter, refrain from any mobility that is not absolutely necessary.”

Holy Thursday away from work?

The strict regulations should also apply to Holy Thursday, which is not actually a public holiday. But this year should be a “full day of rest”, demanded the Prime Minister of Baden-Württemberg, Winfried Kretschmann. How this decision can be legally implemented is questionable. Kretschmann considers a regulation on the holiday law unlikely. Such regulation would have to be implemented by all federal states and the time until Easter is too short for that. According to Kretschmann, one possibility would be to create an exception for Holy Thursday through the Infection Protection Act and declare it a day of rest this year.

Weil also admitted that legal details are still open, especially regarding Maundy Thursday. It is based on a legal obligation, so “we have no people in total on this day in working life.” According to the plans, employees in industries particularly relevant to the system are excluded. According to Weil, it is also not clear so far whether a distinction is made between working directly at a company and working from home when it comes to quiet on Maundy Thursday. “But I guess a general day off will also apply to head office,” Weil said.

“Rest day”: not defined in any law

It is important that all citizens know: The term “day of rest”, born almost overnight, is not defined in any law. This means that this term in the decision document from the night before does not automatically follow certain rules for people’s everyday life, which refers to work, shopping and much more on these planned days. The federal states have yet to establish these rules and then inform them about them. And if there really were a complete ban on gatherings on the “days of rest” during Easter, including demonstrations with very few people and a lot of distance in the open, the courts would certainly review it very critically. Hamburg and Berlin are taking a stricter path

For some country leaders, the toughest Easter blockade doesn’t go far enough. The first mayor of Hamburg, Peter Tschentscher, announced that the Hanseatic city would be “a little more strict”. This should apply to contact restrictions, for example. The federal and state governments agreed that a maximum of five people from two households can come together, not including children under the age of 14. In Hamburg, since the so-called emergency brake took effect last Saturday, only members of one household can meet someone from another household.

Berlin also wants to go its own way, with a view to the duration of the blockade. The federal government and state leaders agreed that the stricter conditions should apply again until April 18. However, the Berlin Senate decided to extend the closure for a week. It will remain in effect until April 24.
