A young man was seriously injured while making firecrackers in Schleswig-Holstein. The winter garden, in which he handled the chemicals on Tuesday, was destroyed and the parents’ home suffered significant damage, Eckernförde police said.

The 19-year-old suffered severe burns. They had taken him to a special clinic in Lübeck. According to a police spokesman, there is a danger of death.

The explosion at his parents’ townhouse occurred in the morning, according to police. The young man worked with the chemicals in the semi-detached house’s greenhouse, which then exploded. Neighboring houses were reportedly unaffected.

Wehrführer Meint Behrmann from the Eckernförde volunteer fire brigade said the fire was already out when the comrades arrived. There must have been a jet of flame, but the fire was probably extinguished due to the strong pressure wave. The house was damaged in the explosion at the rear of the garden, but it is still habitable.

One resident told the shz.de online portal about the blast: “At first I thought of a naval maneuver, but it is never that violent.”

In Schleswig-Holstein, the sale of fireworks is banned this year, as in all parts of Germany.
