The main music festivals in Germany and Switzerland will not take place next summer due to the corona pandemic. Seven outdoor events were canceled in one go.

Due to the corona pandemic, the major music festivals in Germany and Switzerland will be canceled again this summer. This was announced by the organizing network “Eventim Live”. Therefore, the festivals “Rock am Ring”, “Rock im Park”, “Deichbrand”, “Hurricane”, “Southside”, “SonneMondSterne” and the Swiss “Greenfield Festival” will not be held.

“2021 should be the summer of the reunion. And the festival organizers have invested a lot of work and time in hygiene and infection protection concepts,” said Frithjof Pils, managing director of “Eventim Live”. “However, in view of the ongoing epidemic situation and associated conditions, we now had to regretfully accept that festivals of this magnitude are not yet feasible.”

Ticket refund should be possible

Such major events had already been canceled in the summer of 2020. The traditional “Rock am Ring” and “Rock im Park” festivals, which take place at the same time, were scheduled for the second weekend of June 2021 with heads of billboards like Green Day, System Of A Down and Volbeat. According to the new responsible concert agency “Dreamhaus”, they should now take place again on the first weekend of June 2022. Which headliners will come is still unclear at the moment.

“We are working on the program,” said “Dreamhaus” spokeswoman Claudia Schulte. The first information should be available as soon as possible. In just a few weeks, fans who already purchased tickets this year or even last year will be able to rebook them online for 2022. However, a refund is also possible later.

Strong youth cut

Youth researcher Klaus Hurrelmann sees a major turning point in young people’s lives as they have to skip large popular festivals for the second year. “That is part of the attitude towards life,” said the professor, referring to the shared experience of the festival. It not only loses culture for young people, but also the opportunity to experience something completely different.

Not all festival organizers in Germany have given their opinion yet. “Unfortunately, I’m pretty sure there will be more cancellations,” said Federal Concert and Events Industry Association President Jens Michow. There will be these great events again. “But I have been very careful to decide when it will be again.”
