Draw in Switzerland: another lost advantage

Again, nothing with the opening victory: the German team also failed their first success on the sixth attempt in the Nations League. Against Switzerland, Germany lost another lead.

National coach Joachim Löw’s team had to be content with a disappointing 1: 1 (1: 0) against Switzerland on Sunday night (6 September 2020) in Basel, and it was even well served. As in the match against Spain, the DFB-Elf lost an advantage, which Ilkay Gündogan had provided with a good goal on this occasion (minute 14). But Silvan Widmer tied for Switzerland in the second half (58).

“Unfortunately, it was similar to Spain, so we can definitely work to have more solutions and more confidence in ourselves as a team,” said Toni Kroos at ZDF. “When there are six points to distribute and you only get two, that’s disappointing.” And Gündogan even said, “I’m a little pissed off. That pissed me off.”

Gündogan hits with feeling

The DFB-Elf had a better start to the game, were confident on the ball, and combined with some ingenuity to advance immediately after losing the ball. The lead for Germany then fell when central defender Matthias Ginter appeared in the opponent’s penalty area in the 14th minute, hopefully defending the ball against three Swiss, then thoughtfully returning it to the edge of the penalty area. Ginter had seen Gündogan there, whose shot struck the lower right corner. Yann Sommer in the goal of the Swiss had no chances of defense.

Seferovic = danger to the German goal

Then an open soccer game was developed, in which the Swiss also knew how to appeal offensively. It was the 26th minute when Breel Embolo took out Renato Steffen, whose shot in the near corner was defused by Bernd Leno. It was the first good opportunity for Switzerland, but it was not the last. Haris Seferovic was involved in the two most dangerous actions. First Ginter faked a left-handed shot from Seferovic to the back, the ball landed in the net of the goal (36th). Then Seferovic slipped behind Niklas Süle, but only hit the outside post with his shot (44th).

Sports show expert Schweinsteiger is essential

Right now, the defensive structure in national coach Joachim Loew’s team was not always good. Sports entertainment expert Bastian Schweinsteiger, however, has recognized another problem. “I lack the quality of the central defenders a bit,” says Bastian Schweinsteiger. Especially with the ball on the foot, they could still improve. “There is definitely still a lack of creativity.”

It was best seen when the DFB-Elf was heading towards the Swiss goal at high speed. Once, it was the 32nd minute of the game, Timo Werner was played on the left wing. Werner raised his head and then played flat into the penalty area, where Leroy Sané let the ball pass and Julian Draxler missed from a central position in Sommer. “You can see that the team has talent and quality,” says Schweinsteiger. “But of course there are some things to improve: the coldness and the scam in certain situations.”

Widmer finds the gap

The start of the second half was reminiscent of the first, again it took less than a quarter of an hour until a goal was scored, but this time the Swiss cheered. The assist came from Embolo, who ran down the left side and threw the ball to the center. In the German defense, the transfer did not fit, Widmer had too much room at the far post and completed with a shot against the direction of Leno (57th).

Afterwards, not much came out of the German team. Werner shot from 18 meters (61), an attempt by Julian Brandt decisively faked the opponent Ivan Benito (66), those were the best chances for the DFB-Elf, who in the end even lost a point. He had to tremble. But goalkeeper Leno directed a Granit Xhaka free kick around the post (85).
