Ten years ago, hardly a Gladbach fan would have thought that his team could defeat Real Madrid. In 2020, this dream would have almost come true, until the time of arrest.

Borussia Mönchengladbach missed a real sensation against Real Madrid on matchday two. Coach Marco Rose’s team “only” scored 2: 2 against Toni Kroos’s team. Until the time of discount, Borussia led against Real thanks to two goals from Marcus Thuram.

Karim Benzema (87th) and Casemiro (90th + 3rd) brought the Gladbachers out of all their dreams with their late goals. After the embarrassing opening failure against Shakhtar Donetsk, it was the first win on points for Los Blancos.

“I told everyone Gladbach is a good team. Caution is definitely required,” said Rio World Champion Toni Kroos appealing to his teammates before kick-off.

But when they met the winner of the Champions League record in 35 years, Borussia was initially challenged on defense. Led by Kroos, Casemiro and Fede Valverde, the champions of Spain let the ball circulate, the Gladbachers had to do a lot of career work. With great discipline and diligence, the five-time German champion initially managed to get the guests to combine mainly in safe areas. The first approach to Karim Benzema’s goal did not change anything (16th).

Surprising tour of Gladbach

Initially, however, Rose’s team did not put up any offensive punctures. On the one hand, Borussia almost never came up with a constructive playing structure, on the other hand, there was a lack of precision. Not so for the guests, who increased the pressure after 20 minutes thanks to their playful class. But the Gladbachers were able to rely on goalkeeper Yann Sommer when Kroos closed from the edge of the penalty area (29th).

The advantage of the colts, who had fought a point at Inter Milan (2: 2) at the beginning, was a surprise. After a good double with Jonas Hofmann, Alassane Plea served fellow Frenchman Thuram with plenty of overview. This left goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois without a chance with his remarkable direct acceptance.

The blow took effect. Real still had a lot of possession, but the last pass to the top or the centers to Benzema often did not arrive. Shot from an acute angle, Summer was there too (38th).

The irritated Spaniards came out of the break angry and full of energy. Asensio’s slightly deflected shot hit the post (46th). Real increased the number of hits, the Gladbachers lost their order a bit. Vinicius Junior aimed too imprecisely (50º).

The hosts were now very low, but then they quickly found their way back to their safety. Borussia always got into quick-change situations. After a Plea volley, Courtois let the ball bounce off Thuram’s feet, who got up from close range.

The dream explodes

Real was surprised. The request failed after a pass from Florian Neuhaus in front of Courtois (61st), captain Lars Stindl missed the goal (66th).

On the other hand, Asensio tested Sommer from a distance (70º). Zidane put it all on one card and brought in the injured Eden Hazard, who lost the opportunity to score the next goal shortly after (74). Then Benzema hit and Casemiro ruined Gladbach’s dreams.
