In an explosion at a residential building on the Wellendorfer Ring in Hilter, three men were injured, one of them in mortal danger.

According to initial findings, the three men, ages 20, 21 and 26, had manipulated chemicals in the 20-year-old’s room to make a firecracker, police said Friday morning.

When the chemicals were mixed, the explosion occurred on the top floor of a row house. The men were injured by the shock wave and flying debris. In addition, all the burns suffered.

Parts of the 21-year-old’s limbs were cut off. A BILD police spokesman: “At least the young man’s fingers were affected.” According to information from BILD, the hand and a thigh were also seriously injured.

The 21-year-old is in mortal danger. The 26-year-old was seriously injured in the accident and the 20-year-old was slightly injured. All were transferred to hospitals.

The force of the blast was so violent that the building clearly showed signs of an explosion. Several cracks ran through the building, police said. In total, the house suffered material damage of around 100,000 euros. The police confiscated the crime scene because the house was in danger of collapsing.

The Georgsmarienhütte police have launched investigations into the background to the crime, in particular the mixed substances and the accident.
