Thousands of European truckers have to persevere in the port of Dover: they are not allowed to pass without a negative Corona test. Therefore, many will not be able to celebrate Christmas at home with their families.

secondIf the huge truck traffic jam around the port of Dover dissolves, it should take “a few days,” according to the British government. There is now “a lot to do” and the problem will not be solved “immediately,” Housing Minister Robert Jenrick told Sky News on Wednesday.

Thousands of truckers from continental Europe have been stranded in southern England for days because French authorities did not allow them to enter the country due to the new variant of the coronavirus discovered in Britain. Therefore, many will not be able to celebrate Christmas at home with their families. Because of this, there were repeated fights between the police and the truckers. Meanwhile, however, the London and Paris governments have reached an agreement.

The port of Dover reopened Wednesday night after Paris and London decided to relax strict travel and traffic restrictions. A negative corona test is required to enter France.

According to Jenricks, about 4,000 trucks were stranded in the port area Tuesday night, either on the freeway to Dover or at an adjacent unused airport. Among other things, truck drivers should now be able to test there.

Jenrick said the soldiers would help with the tests. But it will take time for the backwater to clear.
