“Don’t do it any other way”: Drosten: The situation can also come to a head here

In Germany crown numbers are only slightly increasing, in France, Spain or England they seem to be disappearing. Virologist Drosten cautions against wishful thinking: Germany should not pretend “that everything is unfolding very differently for us.”

In the face of the corona situation in some other European countries, the virologist Christian Drosten has warned of a similar development in this country. In view of the new infections currently reported in Germany, it must be clear that “if we overlap the curves, we are a little behind Spain, France and England,” said the head of Virology at Charité. He stressed that “we shouldn’t pretend that things are unfolding very differently for us. We also don’t do a lot of things very differently now.”

“There are some details that may be different here than in southern Europe. Our households are often smaller, we have more one-person households,” said Drosten. There are fewer multigenerational families in which the virus is very easily transmitted beyond age limits. “Those are certainly differences. But otherwise, Germany is not very different from these European neighbors. So we have to be very careful and watch what is happening now very closely.”

The frequency of testing is extremely high in Germany, but only since the decision to test returning travelers, Drosten said. “This is a testing frequency that we in Germany cannot endure for much longer.” The basic testing activity that was previously done in Germany and will soon be carried out again is not much greater than in other neighboring European countries. The core of infection control is only slightly more pronounced in us than in other countries. “This is why we have to take the numbers seriously.”

As Drosten explained, the number of cases in Germany during the summer was largely due to returnees from vacation who would not necessarily have transmitted the virus to a large extent in this country. These infected people prefer to give clues about the situation of the crown in the country of origin. “What we are seeing at the moment is a reflection of what is happening in Germany in the form of virus cases.”

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reported about 2,200 new corona infections nationwide on Thursday, as many as last time in mid-August and only regularly in April. Early Friday morning, the RKI reported 1916 new cases. In addition, health authorities announced seven new deaths related to the coronavirus. The RKI numbers differ slightly from those regularly reported by ntv.de (last night: 2,094 new infections, 5 deaths). The reason for this is the different survey methods. The RKI reports on the cases reported by the health authorities at night. ntv.de summarizes the end of the day for the federal states.
