Donny van de Beek at Manchester United out

Old Trafford was once a fortress.

A stadium in which there was absolutely nothing to gain for most of the rivals. Those days were a little while ago. In the current season, Manchester United’s headquarters are not reminiscent of the football bulwark of recent days.

A quick look at the stats proves it: For the first time in 48 years, the Red Devils failed to win their first three home games of the season. After two big defeats against Crystal Palace (1: 3) and Tottenham Hotspur (1: 6), Chelsea got at least one point on Saturday (0: 0).

The game didn’t really serve as a ray of hope because the offense in particular wasn’t convincing. Someone who can certainly bring creative moments sat on the bench for 90 minutes against Chelsea. We are talking about the newcomer Donny van de Beek, who came to Manchester from Ajax Amsterdam for 40 million pounds (just under 44 million euros).

Evra: “Why did we hire him?”

Fans and experts were surprised by the 23-year-old’s reservist role. Former United pro and now television expert Patrice Evra said on Heaven: “We’re talking about van de Beek, nothing against the boy, but why did we catch him?” The midfielder follows each game from the bench. In fact, van de Beek only played a manageable 59 minutes in the Premier League for ManUnited, always as a substitute.

Evra’s verdict: “We don’t need it.”

Another expert, Phil Neville, spoke of a “mystery. It doesn’t seem to be at the forefront of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans (coach, note).” Van den Beek had to think: “What am I doing here?” Solskjaer brushed aside the criticism after the game and simply claimed that van de Beek could still play.

A side note at the end: unlike the Dutch international, Edinson Cavani was replaced by Chelsea 30 minutes before the end of the match. The Uruguayan celebrated his competitive debut.
