Donald Trump: What will become of him and the Republicans?

No, not all Americans condemn the storm on Capitol Hill. Many supporters of Donald Trump are proud of the fact.

Before the US elections, Alexandra Rojkov, editor of SPIEGEL in the foreign affairs department, contacted a group of Republican voters who still see Donald Trump as a savior. After the violent assault on the Capitol, he wanted to know if that changed his support for the outgoing president of the United States and his movement.

Because not all Trumpistas celebrate the rapid radicalization of their party and its spokesmen; many are now faced with the decision to endorse Trump’s policies on their merits, as they are outmatched by violent sections of the right-wing community. A successful impeachment process could remove the Trump leader from office, but the movement lives on and becomes a threat to the Republican party.

Juan Moreno talks to Ralf Neukirch about how Donald Trump kidnapped, divided and deformed the Republican Party in four years so that some see a breakup coming from the “big old party” and some fear it could get much worse.

For Ralf Neukirch, the unrest in Washington marks the spectacular end of his time as an American correspondent, and possibly a decisive turning point in the history of the Republican Party.

In this episode, Juan Moreno moderates the podcast “Eight billion” for the last time, because in the future he will dedicate himself to a new project at SPIEGEL: “So far, I can only say that, in my opinion, it will be absolutely fantastic”. His successor as host of Olaf Heuser will take podcasts and continue with “Eight Billion.” In the future, podcast listeners will also be able to learn about the research, reports, and experience of colleagues in the international department on the podcast.
