US President Donald Trump put the consequences of climate change in perspective during a visit to wildfire zones in California. During a public conversation with emergency services and officials in Sacramento, California, Trump told California’s natural resources agency chief Wade Crowfoot: “It’s going to be cooler again. You’ll see.” When Crowfoot responded that he wanted science to agree with Trump, the US President said, “I don’t think science knows.”
Trump: “trees just explode”
Trump again blamed inadequate forest care for the huge wildfires in the western United States. “There has to be strong forest management,” Trump demanded. Fallen trees dry up a lot after a short time. “They really become like a match. They just pop,” Trump said.
The governor of California, Gavin Newsom, admitted that it is necessary to improve forest management, but linked the fires with climate change: “Heat waves are getting hotter and droughts are getting drier,” said the politician of the Democratic opposition. Climate change is “real” and exacerbates the crisis.
Joe Biden Calls Trump “Climate Arson”
Meanwhile, Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden has harshly criticized Trump’s views on climate change. Although “the West is literally on fire,” Trump continues to deny climate change and its “relentless” consequences, Biden said in Wilmington, Delaware. Rather than basing his policy on scientific knowledge, Trump operates as a “climate arsonist.”
Biden said that “Trump’s denial of climate change” “may not have caused the fires, record floods and record hurricanes.” But if Trump reaches a second term, “these hellish events will become more frequent, more destructive and deadly.”
In addition to California, the states of Oregon and Washington are affected by severe wildfires. Meanwhile, the southern states of the country were preparing for the arrival of another hurricane and associated flooding.
