US President Donald Trump on Wednesday asked his supporters to move to the Capitol and not put up with the electoral fraud he had spread. Then Trump supporters stormed parliament and wreaked havoc. Now, some 24 hours later, Trump condemns the riot.

He was outraged by the violence, Trump said in a video on Twitter. The platform had recently lifted the lock on Trump’s account. Trump called the storm on Capitol Hill a “gruesome attack.” The protesters had “contaminated the seat of American democracy” with their action. But: “America is and always will be a nation of law and order.” Those responsible must be held accountable. The situation must calm down now, Trump said.

The president himself had encouraged his followers to move to the Capitol. In a speech on Wednesday he urged tens of thousands of supporters present not to put up with the “theft” of the elections. As a result of the riots, Trump initially avoided explicitly condemning the violence. Since the riots, there have been calls for Trump’s early removal. The Republican’s term officially ends on January 20.

“Smooth, orderly and smooth power transfer”

In the Twitter video, Trump repeated his unsubstantiated allegations of election fraud, but made it clear that he would hand over his post to President-elect Joe Biden in an orderly manner. “A new government will be sworn in on January 20,” Trump said: “My focus now is to ensure a smooth, orderly and smooth transfer of power.” Trump asked the United States for a “reconciliation” and a “healing” process.

Trump also told American citizens that it had been the “honor of his life” to serve as president. However, he made it clear that he is unlikely to be removed from the public eye. “And to all my wonderful fans: I know you are disappointed,” Trump said: “But I want you to know that our incredible journey is just beginning.”

Trump supporters broke into the Capitol on Wednesday. They broke windows and occupied rooms. Due to the unrest, the police had to bring the parliamentarians to safety. A woman was shot and killed by police during the Capitol riots.
