He seems increasingly desperate. But even in the second week after the US elections, Donald Trump does not want to accept the result that is so bitter for him. Even in his own field, voices against the White House blockade are increasing.
The president-elect of the United States reiterated unsubstantiated allegations of fraud in connection with the American elections and announced new procedures. Trump wrote on Twitter Sunday that he would soon begin “major trials” in which the outcome of the November 3 presidential election would be questioned.
“Our big lawsuits, exposing the unconstitutionality of the 2020 elections and the insolence with which things were done to change the outcome, are about to be presented!”
Democratic candidate Joe Biden had prevailed in the election against Republican President Trump. Trump continues to deny his defeat and hopes to reverse Biden’s victory on the legal path. Election officials from both camps have stated that there are no signs of major irregularities at the polls.
In Pennsylvania, lawyers give in
This is one reason the Trump camp has suffered a series of defeats in previous attempts in court. And his lawyers have even softened a lawsuit against the outcome of the presidential election in the important state of Pennsylvania. When the complaint was updated, they removed the allegations that when votes were counted, observers on Trump’s side violated constitutional rights. Trump’s lawyers wanted to invalidate several hundred thousand votes in Pennsylvania on this basis.
The charge continues to be that Trump’s Republican voters were at a disadvantage in Pennsylvania because some democratically-oriented districts were allowed to correct ballot errors.
Pennsylvania brings in 20 votes from electoral voters. 270 votes are required for victory, Biden got 306. It was not clear whether the partial setback in Pennsylvania is an admission of a legal impasse or simply a reorganization.
Does Trump want to turn against the Supreme Court?
Trump, meanwhile, appeared to appeal to the United States Supreme Court on Twitter. “Those responsible for protecting our constitution cannot allow the false results of the 2020 postal vote to stand,” he wrote. Trump had placed special emphasis on bringing conservative Justice Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court shortly before the presidential election, also with a view to possible proceedings around the election result. The Conservatives now have a majority of six of the nine justices there. Three of them were named at Trump’s proposal.
In light of the pandemic, many Americans, especially Democrats in big cities, voted by letter. Given that in several states these documents were only counted after polling station ballots, Trump was initially in the lead and was later overtaken by Biden. In Arizona, however, there was the opposite development: There Trump caught up with the vote-by-mail count, but Biden still won the state by a narrow margin.
