US President Trump is doing everything he can to make it more difficult for voters to vote by mail. The judiciary has yet to help him: judges in several states have again ruled against him and his campaign team.
President Donald Trump’s Republicans have suffered further legal defeats in the dispute over vote-by-letter in the US elections. A federal judge in Nevada has dismissed a lawsuit by Trump’s campaign team against the plan to send vote-by-mail ballots to all residents of the state.
The publication is also going strong
In Wisconsin, a second federal judge extended the deadline for properly postmarked records to be counted to November 9, six days after the actual election date. In New York, a third federal judge ordered the US Postal Service to prioritize all election documents and allow them overtime.
Democrats had previously recorded victories in Michigan and Pennsylvania, and last Thursday a US federal court blocked changes to the US postal service that delayed mail delivery and raised concerns about vote-by-mail.
Trump raises doubts about legitimacy
The dispute between Democrats and Republicans over vote by mail has raged for months. In light of the coronavirus pandemic, many election officials had asked citizens to cast their vote by mail this year. According to polls, almost half of Democrats want to vote this way, but only a quarter of Republicans.
Trump has been raising his spirits against vote-by-mail for months, warning of the “biggest fraud in history.” In some states, like Virginia, vote-by-mail ballots were sent to “dead and dogs,” he said. He did not present any evidence for this, the experts reject the presentation Trump himself has voted several times in the past by mail.
More recently, the president caused a stir by declaring that his supporters should cast two votes: one by mail and one at the polling station. Double voting is prohibited in the United States. In the 2016 presidential election, nearly a quarter of all votes were cast by mail. In some states like Washington and Oregon, voting is only done by mail.
