VfL Bochum reached the knockout stages of the DFB Cup on penalties. In 5: 2 (1: 0, 2: 2, 2: 2) after penalties for the second division against Mainz 05, the Mainz team led by Jean-Paul Boëtius (7th minute) and Danny Latza (55th) with two goals against Bochums Gerrit Holtmann (66th) and Robert Tesche (90th + 5th) provided the extension.

In the penalty shootout, substitute goalkeeper Patrick Drewes, who had to enter the goal in extra time for Manuel Riemann, who had been sent off, saved the decisive penalty. The Mainz team fired the previous two penalties against aluminum.

A lot has happened in Mainz 05 in the last few days. On Tuesday, the club announced that sporting director Rouven Schröder would be leaving the club. Previously, there were rumors about the return of former Mainz manager Christian Heidel. Coach Jan-Moritz Lichte may also have to leave his post as a result of the chair change. With just six points from 13 games, Mainz is second to last in the Bundesliga.

However, Mainz initially showed a good performance. Already in the seventh minute, Boëtius led Mainz to the lead with a powerful shot from the near corner, goalkeeper Manuel Riemann was unable to react quickly enough. As a result, the Mainz team missed a previous top leadership; Jeremiah St. Juste missed Riemann (36th), Danny Latza put the ball over from a promising position (37th).

Equalization in stop time

Latza only increased on the second attempt after Robin Quaison deftly placed the ball in the penalty area with a heel (55 °). In the second round, Bochum improved and passed through former Mainz Gerrit Holtmann (66th). In the fifth minute of injury time, Robert Tesche leveled when he headed a Robert Zujl cross into the far corner.

The extension was then spectacular. Goalkeeper Riemann flew off the field with red after a tackle outside the penalty area. A controversial decision by referee Martin Petersen, because Riemann was not the last man (95th). Also bitter for Bochum: before being sent off, central defender Armel Bella-Kotchap fell to the ground after a free-kick cross into the Mainz penalty area. Petersen’s pipe had been silent. The video assistant is only available in the DFB Cup from the round of 16.

However, there was a happy ending for Bochum. After Adam Szalai and Kevin Stöger missed on penalties on aluminum, substitute goalkeeper Drewes blocked a shot from Jean-Philippe Mateta. Riemann burst onto the field and congratulated his fellow goalkeeper.
