DFB Cup: Borussia Dortmund beat Paderborn thanks to Erling Haaland

There was no cup sensation in Dortmund: against SC Paderborn, the Bundesliga six managed a 3-2 (2-0, 2-2) victory in extra time. Emre Can (minute 6) and Jadon Sancho (16) seemed to have paved the way to the DFB Cup quarter-finals from the start. Then Julian Justvan scored the next goal (79th), with a penalty in the last second Prince Owusu saved the second division team in extra time (90th + 7th). Erling Haaland met there to win for Dortmund (95th).

BVB coach Edin Terzic was forced to improvise against the second division team: goalkeeper Roman Bürki, right-back Thomas Meunier, central defender Dan-Axel Zagadou and, on short notice, captain Mats Hummels were injured. But until the substitute defense became a problem late, the Bundesliga team had the game under control: Paderborn’s team failed to get Dortmund’s second corner kick, Can scored from five meters to make it 1-0.

Jadon Sancho extended Dortmund’s lead after a simple attack: Julian Brandt extended a long pass from goalkeeper Marvin Hitz to Haaland. The Norwegian pushed Sancho, who escaped from Paderborn’s defense and scored the next blow.

Paderborn is still dangerous

It was only in the last 20 minutes that Paderborn’s team made the game exciting again: Clemens Führich missed from a tight angle due to the heat, Justvan hit after a failed header from Felix Passlack to connect. In injury time, an alleged Haaland goal seemed to have decided the game, until the video assistant reported. Referee Stieler missed the goal, but decided on a penalty for Paderborn.

Passlack had fouled his opponent Sebastian Schonlau in his own penalty area. Owusu converted the penalty due. Haaland was there again in extra time: after a pass from Thomas Delaney, Dortmund’s most accurate attacker ran alone towards Paderborn’s goal and scored with a left-footed shot to win.

This means that BVB will remain in the lottery when circumnavigator Boris Herrmann will draw the pairings for the next round alongside DFB manager Oliver Bierhoff on Sunday (6.30pm) as part of the ARD “Sportschau”. The DFB Cup quarterfinal matches will take place on March 2 and 3.
