In Frankfurt, Deutsche Bahn presented its plans for the new line between Frankfurt and Mannheim. The new route should be faster and relieve the old route.
Over 30 different routes have been debated over the years. Above all, the connection to Darmstadt and the question of where the new route should run were questions repeatedly contested with the various route variants.
Breathe in relief in Darmstadt
If the preferred variant of the railway is implemented, Darmstadt will be connected to the new line. The new route will run along the A5 and A67 to Lorsch. There, the trains must pass through a tunnel under the Lampertheim forest and only resurface in northern Mannheim, and connect with the Riedbahn.
Concerns of municipalities with the new ICE line
Each municipality along the potential route had its concerns and wishes in advance. Some were afraid of noise, others of disconnecting from the ICE express train network. Concerns were allowed to be raised in a participatory forum. On the rail side, the route variant now chosen is said to protect residents as best as possible from noise.
More connections to Mannheim
Thanks to the new route, there will be a hundred additional long-distance connections in the future, and thus twice as many as before. And local transportation will also expand significantly, according to Deutsche Bahn. In addition, the travel time between Frankfurt and Mannheim will be shortened somewhat, from 38 to 29 minutes.
It will be some time before the first trains start rolling. The building permitting process is scheduled to begin next year.
