Good news for passionate train drivers!

Federal Minister of Transport Andreas Scheuer (45, CSU) has presented a new rail concept. Specifically: high-speed trains and night trains should better connect European metropolises with each other in the future.

“It’s about fast and continuous train connections,” Scheuer told the “Funke Mediengruppe” newspapers. “Based on the example of Germany-Takt, we want to establish a Europe-Takt: people should better pass through Europe by train.”

On Monday, Scheuer wants to officially present a corresponding concept at a railway summit with his colleagues from the European transport minister. It should be related to the Presidency of the Council of the EU of Germany.

Trains are needed that are comfortably equipped and can be used across borders, the minister said. “For this, we need an EU funding program.” Furthermore, a digital platform must be created through which European rail connections can be booked.

Are TEE trains returning?

And the Minister of Transport has an idea up his sleeve for those nostalgic for trains: the legendary tea trains. This was initially reported by “Der Spiegel”.

The idea: from 1957 to 1987 the famous Trans-Europ-Express (TEE) trains passed through Europe. Now the concept is coming out of the drawers again.

The particularly comfortable luxury trains served connections between the states of the European Economic Community, as well as Austria and Switzerland. They could drive up to 200 km / h, had air conditioning and only first-class carriages. Eventually, they were replaced by the not-so-attractive Eurocity.

TEE trains could celebrate their return starting in 2025!

As an example of the turnaround in traffic, Scheuer cited a connection from Paris via Brussels, Cologne and Berlin to Warsaw: “A train leaving Paris at 9am could be in Cologne at 12.15pm. M., Berlin at 4.45 pm and Warsaw at 10.15 pm ser. “

Many connections could be established on short notice, others require infrastructure expansion, Scheuer said. He was convinced that by 2025 a network for high-speed and night train services could be operational.

When asked if this would make train travel more expensive, the CSU politician said: “That would be the wrong signal, but the prices are set by the rail companies.”
