Despite 16,000 new infections: protest against the new blockade in France

New daily infections in France recently surpassed the previous peak, almost jokingly, at around 2,400 cases. Therefore, the government is closing public life in many large cities. Restaurant, bar and gym operators want to oppose the orders.

In France, the number of new corona infections has risen to a new high of 16,000. At the same time, massive resistance to the government’s crown measures is awakening for the first time. Under the motto “Save our bars and restaurants!” Hundreds of innkeepers took to the streets of the city of Marseille, particularly affected, against the announced closure of its restaurants. The regional employers’ association issued a statement warning against an “economic lockdown” because gyms and other facilities were also affected.

In other parts of the country there are also strong protests against the new restrictions on public life, which affect a dozen large cities, including Paris. As of Monday, gatherings of more than ten people and important events with more than 1000 participants are prohibited there. There is a curfew for bars and restaurants starting at 10 pm

“Let’s save our jobs, let’s save our companies,” read a banner in Marseille, where restaurateurs poured out: “The cup is full,” said the owner of a restaurant in neighboring Aix-en-Provence, which also has to close . “We were about to get back on our feet.” Several restaurateurs want to oppose the order of the central government of Paris. On the Internet, they asked other victims under the hashtag “#Resistance” to support their plan.

The president of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region, Renaud Muselier, wants to take legal action against the new restrictions. He sees them as “collective punishment” for the roughly 1.9 million people in the Marseille metropolitan area. The city administration speaks of an “affront”. He criticizes that the central government in Paris did not agree with the new measures.

So far, there have hardly been any street protests against the government’s crown policy in France. The reason is possibly the very high number of 31,500 deaths. Health Minister Olivier Véran visited the largest municipal hospital in Marseille. He was symbolically booed at the rally.

Marseille and its surroundings are the hardest hit by the second wave of corona infections in France. More recently, there were 281 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants, almost six times the alert value. The regional authorities note, however, that the figures have decreased slightly for a week.

Higher level exceeded by 2,400 cases

However, across the country, the situation worsened again: in 24 hours, another 16,096 people tested positive in France, as announced by the national health authority on Thursday night. That’s another 2,400 new infections more than the previous high level last Saturday. The number of deaths per crown increased by 52 in one day.

However, experts note that very little was tested during the first Corona wave in March and April due to a lack of capabilities. There are now more than 1.2 million tests a week.

The reopening of cafes and restaurants after the closure in early June was celebrated with euphoria by many French people. President Emmanuel Macron praised the catering establishments as symbols of “the French spirit, our culture and art of living.” Its renewed closure fuels fears of a new national curfew.

Prime Minister Jean Castex appealed on television to the common “responsibility” of the French. He argued that the stricter measures could prevent another lockdown.
