Cologne / Mönchengladbach On March 11, Borussia against Cologne was the first ghost game in the history of the Bundesliga. Although spectators are now once again allowed in most venues, the derby will also take place on Saturday in the cathedral city in front of almost empty stands.
The crucial number rose again from Thursday to Friday: from 36.4 to 36.9. What is meant is the new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in the city of Cologne in the last seven days.
This means that Cologne is above the limit of 35 that the federal states set when spectators were admitted to the Bundesliga again. Therefore, the derby against Borussia Mönchengladbach must take place on Saturday (start at 3.30 pm) with hardly any spectators. 1. FC Köln sold 9,200 tickets. Initially, no fans were allowed, on Friday night the city allowed 300 fans into the stadium.
FC’s first home game of the season against TSG Hoffenheim (2: 3) had also turned into a ghost match the night before. The club and the city had originally agreed to announce two days before a match whether spectators can enter the stadium or not. But the deciding factor is the incidence a day earlier, says the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
For Borussia, this means that after games in Dortmund against 9,300 and at home against Union Berlin in front of 10,300 fans, they have to prepare for a ghostly scenario. An advantage for the foals? Guest fans are not allowed anyway. Furthermore, Cologne last won a Bundesliga match before the start of the crown pandemic, in front of an audience.
The last derby on March 11 was the first ghost game in Bundesliga history. Borussia won in their own stadium with the historic goal by Breel Embolo and an own goal by Colonia Jorge Meré 2-1. Mark Uth only managed the late connection goal.
Incidentally, the incidence number in Mönchengladbach was 12.6 on Friday morning, well below the cutoff value. Borussia’s next home game will take place against VfL Wolfsburg on October 17. But caution is also required in the Lower Rhine: around 90 new Covid 19 infections in the city in a week are enough to exceed the limit value. Borussia has not yet started advance sales for the Wolfsburg game.
