Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) – Several thousand people followed a call for a demonstration against coronavirus restrictions in Stuttgart on Saturday. Police saw a heavy influx of people at the protest site, a police spokesman said. It got quite crowded. Initially, the police were unable to give an exact number of participants. The police ensured that the protection against infection and the required distance were observed. There were no major problems. The requirements were mostly met, it was kept in peace.

Initiator Michael Ballweg originally registered 50,000 participants for the rally at Cannstatter Wasen, which was described as nonpartisan. However, the city of Stuttgart ended this: Ballweg had to limit the meeting to a maximum of 10,000 participants. A city spokesperson said nothing else is possible for the city and the police. The deciding factor was that no one was infected by the demonstration, the city had previously announced.

Last weekend, several thousand people came to Wasen to demonstrate what they saw as limited fundamental rights. The organizer spoke of 5,000 participants at the time.

Behind the protest is Ballweg’s “lateral thinking” initiative. His regular demos have been well received recently. Similar demonstrations are held across the country. Critics fear that conspiracy theorists and right-wing populists will take him away.
