Demonstration on Saturday in Leipzig: all meetings are over

Leipzig – Demo-Tag in Leipzig! Or not? The so-called “lateral thinkers” wanted to march again by the thousands in the fair city this Saturday and demonstrate against the measures of the Crown. However, instead of meeting like-minded people, many of them met with the police upon arrival.

On Saturday, police officers from North Rhine-Westphalia searched arriving vehicles in Luise-Otto-Peters-Allee, near Leipzig.

Because after the experiences of the November demonstrations, the emergency services are already taking action early this time. Public and private transport in the direction of Leipzig has been reviewed since yesterday Friday (TAG24 reported).

According to a report by “Bild”, all federal and other major access roads to the fair town have been cordoned off. Images from Luise-Otto-Peters-Allee near Lindenthal show North Rhine-Westphalia officials checking vehicles.

On the B181 in Dölzig, the police stopped a coach heading to a prohibited demonstration. The Leipzig city administration had banned three meetings on Friday afternoon, which “after examination were verifiable attributable to the lateral thinker scene.”

As the police announced on Twitter, the 30 inmates and the two bus drivers received reports. “Subsequently, the bus will be escorted by our forces to the national border,” security forces said on Twitter.

The police are there, while in Leipzig nothing of the “lateral thinkers” is seen.

Critics of Corona had still tried to be able to march with a “Corona Spartakiade” on Augustusplatz after the city had previously banned gatherings that were recorded on short notice (TAG24 reported).

At the estimated time of 12 noon, however, there were only water cannons, mounted forces and even more police in the square in the center of Leipzig.

On Twitter, the authority again points out that there are no approved “lateral thinking” meetings in Leipzig and that these are constantly avoided. “Our forces are present in the city and monitor compliance with protection against infections.”

UPDATE, 8.46pm.: Leipzig Police Chief Comments on Demonstration Events

Leipzig Police Chief Torsten Schultze commented on the event after Saturday’s demonstration at the fair town.

“It was right to ban those gatherings where it was feared from the outset that people would not adhere to the applicable crown protection regulations and thus endanger the health of others,” said Schultze. “With the currently worrying number of Covid-19 sufferers in the Free State of Saxony, protection against infections must be applied consistently.”

The police punished a total of 105 violations of the Saxon Crown Protection Ordinance during the operation. There were also several criminal offenses, including falsification of documents, violation of the Narcotics Law and insults.
