An 89-year-old patient with dementia drinks disinfectants and is in mortal danger. A nurse notices this, but does not call the emergency services. It has now been released without notice.
It is said that it did not help adequately a person suffering from dementia who had drunk disinfectants and thus poisoned himself: therefore the German Red Cross (DRK) has fired a long-time nurse (50) without prior notice. The district association DRK Gütersloh announced on Wednesday.
Therefore, the 89-year-old resident of a shared apartment community for the elderly in Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock (Gütersloh district) had drunk the disinfectant on Tuesday evening for reasons that are still unclear. Another employee found him “in a defenseless and life-threatening condition” early in the morning, according to the DRK. The old man was then taken to a hospital and treated in an intensive care unit.

Over the course of Tuesday, according to the DRK, it turned out that the 50-year-old nurse noticed the 89-year-old’s condition overnight, but had not called the ambulance service as planned. It’s still unclear what exactly he did at the time, a DRK spokesperson said. His behavior led to his release and he was reported to the police.
“We do not understand this gross misconduct on the part of the employee,” said DRK district association board spokesman Dennis Schwoch, according to the announcement. According to the DRK, the man’s condition was critical. He had tested positive for the corona virus prior to the incident and was in quarantine inside the elderly people’s shared apartment.
