A truck driver fell from a bridge into a river with his vehicle. According to the police, the man had strayed from the road in his truck in the morning for an inexplicable cause when he was on a bridge in Delbrück in North Rhine-Westphalia.
It broke the railing and fell over the edge on a flat spot, a spokesman said.
According to police, a rear driver pulled over, went through knee-deep water, got into the truck, which was partially loaded with baked goods, and then helped the driver out of the cab. Both were taken to the bank by firefighters using a revolving ladder. Then the truck driver was taken to a hospital.
The police initially estimated the damage at around 50,000 euros, the bridge railing had been completely destroyed. Due to oil and fuel leaks, firefighters also placed an oil barrier on the Lippe.
According to investigators, recovery of the vehicle could take until night, two tow trucks had been requested.
