Michael van Gerwen was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the 2021 Darts World Cup with no chance. Against English Dave Chisnall, the world number one lost 0-5. For Chisnall it was only the 10th win against van Gerwen in match number 60. The Englishman will face Gary Anderson of Scotland in tomorrow’s semi-finals.

It was one of the clearest defeats of Michael van Gerwen’s career. The three-time world champion couldn’t keep up with the world number eight from the start. Chisnall, for whom it is the first World Cup semi-final and the first victory against van Gerwen in more than four years, produced the maximum score of 180 14 times, ten more than van Gerwen.

In the last leg of the fourth set, »Chizzy« missed the perfect game, the neundarter. After two highs he had 141 left and threw the last dart beyond the double-12 after the triple-20 and the triple-19.

Van Gerwen stayed at 181 points and then shot 141 points with the double 12 at the end. He turned to Chisnall and nodded once. But that didn’t bother the best player that night either. With the next arrow, Chisnall made it 4-0 in sets.

“When he was at 181 and went to the box at 141, I had to hit the double 6 because that’s cheeky,” Chisnall said after the game. “I am happy. It was a great victory, perhaps the greatest.”

For van Gerwen, this means that the Dutchman could lose first place in the world rankings for the first time since 2013. If Gerwyn Price, who won 5: 4 against Daryl Gurney in the first game of the night, becomes world champion, Price is the new number one. The Welshman will play the second semi-final tomorrow against England’s Stephen Bunting.
