After a protester fell several meters in the Dannenröder forest, the Giessen public prosecutor’s office initiated proceedings against a police officer on suspicion of negligent bodily injury in charge. This was reported by the police and police authorities and at the same time declared: “So far there have been no indications of any deliberate action by the officer.”

The 20-year-old fell about three to four meters from a so-called tripod, a three-legged frame, on Sunday morning and suffered serious injuries. The woman was being treated in the hospital, there was no danger of death, the message said.

Police officers observed the incident from about 20 meters away, immediately rendered first aid and called emergency services. After that, the area was cordoned off as a crime scene and officials from the Hessian State Criminal Police Office and the Southeastern Hessian Police Headquarters took over the investigation.

The police officer informed investigators.

Based on the findings so far, the 40-year-old officer, who was about 30 meters from the tripod, discovered a rope at head level. “This rope was not marked, nor did it appear to have a recognizable connection to the occupied structure,” the message read. “As far as we know, there was actually a link between the string and the tripod.” Activists announced Sunday that all safety ropes in the forest were marked accordingly.

Several traps were found in the days before, for example, in the form of wires at head height, the researchers said. “To prevent such risks for everyone in the forest, the officer who had reported to investigators on his own initiative last afternoon cut the rope.”

In the Dannenröder forest near Homberg / Ohm in the Vogelsberg district, trees are being cut down for the construction of Autobahn 49. Against this, protest environmental and climate protectionists, who have kept the forest occupied for more than a year . Once completed, the motorway will connect Kassel and Gießen more directly with each other. Construction is scheduled to begin in September 2021, and 27 hectares of forest will be cleared by February.
