During protests against the expansion of Autobahn 49 and the necessary clearing of the Dannenröder forest in Hesse, a protester fell from a so-called tripod, a three-legged frame, and apparently fell several meters into the depth. Rescue forces observed the accident from a distance and immediately dispatched rescue workers.

As announced by the police in Gießen on Sunday, the protester had been transferred on a stretcher from the forest to an ambulance. Activist officials said the man fell from five meters and was seriously injured. They accused the police of being responsible for the accident: they cut a safety rope, which caused the accident.

The police have been clearing the Dannenröder forest for days. Environmentalists have been protesting there for more than a year against the construction of the highway, which is due to start in September 2021. To do this, 27 hectares of forest must first be cut down before February.

Officials declared the crash site to be the crime scene and cordoned it off, claiming that investigations had been initiated into the cause of the accident.
