Cup Success, Luck and Tigges
BVB does its duty, but nothing more

Borussia Dortmund reached the next round of the cup with a mandatory victory. But the great shine is missing. In terms of exploiting opportunities, the Dortmunders owe a lot to Eintracht Braunschweig. Injured forward Haaland is still sorely missed.

Not endangered, but lackluster: Vice-champion Borussia Dortmund reached the round of 16 with a DFB Cup victory. The fifth in the Bundesliga prevailed 2-0 (1-0) in the second division, promoted to Eintracht Braunschweig and allowed to say goodbye to the short Christmas break after problems in the league and the separation of coach Lucien Favre with a little sense of achievement. Mats Hummels scored the first goal for the dominant but often too cumbersome guests. The BVB captain hit the spot in the twelfth minute with a shot from point-blank range after a free kick from Jadon Sancho. Sancho made it 2-0 himself (90 + 3).

Eintracht Braunschweig – Borussia Dortmund 0: 2 (0: 1)

Tore: 0: 1 Hummels (12.), 0: 2 Sancho (90. + 2)
Braunschweig:
Fejzic – Wiebe (brick 72), Wydra, Nikolaou, Schlueter – Ben Balla (Kroos 80), camera builder – Kaufmann (swing 86), Kobylanski (Otto 72), Bär – Abdullahi (Proschwitz 80); Coach: Meyer.
Dortmund: Hitz – Morey (83. Meunier), Hummels (46. Akanji), Zagadou, Guerreiro – Delaney – Sancho, Bellingham (76. Witsel), Brandt (63. Reus), Reyna (83. Hazard) – Tigges; Coach: Terzic.
Referee: Benjamin Cortus (Röthenbach)

Even in the first half, the guests could have cleared things up. Julian Brandt (22nd) missed a goal after Braunschweig goalkeeper Jasmin Fejzic was abandoned, as did Jude Bellingham, who hit the post in the 35th minute. The most disheartened Lower Saxony opened an opportunity in the 23rd minute for Marcel Bär, who missed because of Marwin Hitz.

The Dortmund goalkeeper replaced regular goalkeeper Roman Bürki and was one of seven new appointments compared to the bitter 1: 2 loss at Union Berlin. New coach Edin Terzic left Marco Reus on the bench, among others, but a change was forced: super talent Youssoufa Moukoko was missing due to knee problems. Steffen Tigges of Dortmund U23, who plays in Regionalliga West, was in the starting eleven.

Haaland’s strength is lacking at BVB

Tigges presented himself well with a dangerous header (17th), but unsurprisingly he was unable to replace striker Erling Haaland (muscle injury). The Norwegian’s strength was greatly missed. Towards the end of the first half, Terzic reacted increasingly annoyed at the increasingly depressurized actions of his protégés.

After switching sides, Dortmund’s negligence continued. Again Brandt did not hit the goal in a promising situation (51.). And they almost tied five minutes later: Bär hit the crossbar after a counterattack. Terzic reacted and sent Reus onto the field for Brandt in the 63rd minute.

After all, the Dortmunders were spared a misfortune like 15 years ago. At the time they lost in the same place against the North Germans in the first round with 1: 2. “You can never completely forget something like that,” said Michael Zorc before the game, then as now as sporting director at BVB in the position and dignity.
