northFollowing a CSU proposal, Germans should be able to store their identity cards on their own smartphones in the future. The same should apply to other official documents such as a driver’s license, according to a draft resolution for the closed-door meeting of the CSU in the Bundestag.
The ID card has had electronic functions for about ten years, and ID cards have always been issued with a chip since 2017. To use the functions, you previously needed not only a smartphone, but also normal identification.
“We want to make using the ID card online on the Internet even easier in the future and for the ID card to be saved directly to your own smartphone,” the CSU template now says. Administrative procedures should be digitized as completely as possible. Frequently used services should be as easy as ordering from an online store.
CSU regional group leader Alexander Dobrindt told “Spiegel”: “In the digital world, we need a digital ID. That is why we want the counterfeit-proof digital ID card that can be used on the smartphone and is recognized as an official identity document. “
