Summary: the most important news of the day

10:33 am | Corona pandemic punches holes in RB Leipzig’s cash register

The crown pandemic is apparently opening bigger holes in Bundesliga club RB Leipzig’s financial planning than had been initially calculated. “We lack revenue of more than 30 million euros,” said Executive Director Oliver Mintzlaff of the “Leipziger Volkszeitung”. So far, the knockout stages of the Champions League had assumed a revenue shortfall below this amount. However, according to Mintzlaff, it was possible not to have to part ways with any employees.

The 45-year-old man illustrates the reduced importance of viewers’ income with reference to television broadcasts. “As long as the ball is rolling and the money from television is in, it will continue,” Mintzlaff said. However, the lack of fans is a great drag.

10:28 am | Chemnitz also bans New Year’s fireworks

In Chemnitz, it is also not allowed to light fireworks in public places and roads on New Year’s Eve. The city administration ordered this today and issued the corresponding general decree. Consequently, only tabletop fireworks are allowed. The ban on firecrackers is linked to the corona pandemic. The city wants to avoid crowds. Furthermore, the situation in already heavily used hospitals should not be aggravated, for example, by accidents involving fireworks.

09:34 am | Dresden issues ban on firecrackers on New Year’s Eve

With a general decree on December 31, 2020 and January 1, 2021, the capital of the state of Dresden prohibited the transport and burning of pyrotechnic objects for the whole day. The city council announced that the ban applies citywide to all public and private areas. This means that firecrackers, rockets and similar fireworks cannot be transported or burned on the days mentioned. This also applies to old and foreign firecrackers.

Actually, it shouldn’t be the job of the state to make regulations for citizens when they celebrate. However, we are currently in a special situation here in Saxony.

Dirk Hilbert | Lord Mayor of Dresden

With the ban on firecrackers, the city administration wants to avoid overloading emergency rooms with casualties. Hospitals have suffered a heavy burden of Covid-19 patients for weeks.
