Crown sprout: Clemens Tönnies defends himself against slaughterhouse closure

The Tönnies meat company, which has made headlines for several crown outbreaks, has resisted the temporary closure of its Emsland location. An injunction has been requested against the district’s decision, said Schlachthof Weidemark, which is owned by Tönnies Holding.

According to the district, 112 employees at the site had tested positive for the corona virus.

“Issuing the closure order today is not proportionate to us,” said Weidemark Managing Director Christopher Rengstorf. If the slaughterhouse in Sögel were to close temporarily, the situation for pig farmers would drastically worsen.

In recent days, the company has taken steps to prevent infections, for example, daily corona tests for employees. According to the company, the number of new infections dropped to seven on Tuesday.

The Emsland district justified the move with the fact that an “exponential spread of the virus in the workforce, but also outside the slaughterhouse” had to be avoided. Initially, the company will be closed for a period of 22 days.
