Hamburg and Corona measures: live press conference

Many stores close on Wednesdays

Many retail stores, as well as hair salons, cosmetic studios and massage practices, must close from next Wednesday until January 10 to protect against the crown, according to the federal-state decision. Grocery stores, weekly markets, pickup and delivery services, beverage markets, health food stores, and pharmacies must remain open. Customers should also be able to continue to use medical supply stores, drugstores, opticians, acoustic hearing aids, gas stations, car repair shops, bicycle shops, banks and savings banks. The mayor appealed to the people of Hamburg to take the measures seriously and refrain from shopping on Mondays and Tuesdays, if possible, so that a “black Friday situation” does not arise.

Compulsory schooling is suspended from Wednesday

Tschentscher announced the suspension of compulsory schooling in Hamburg on Wednesday. Schools and daycare centers remained open until the Christmas holidays, the mayor said. Parents can then decide for themselves whether or not to send their children to school. Holidays start regularly on Fridays. In kindergartens, care will be guaranteed, the mayor said. Many parents are urgently needed as workers in systemically important areas, such as healthcare, and they depend on the care of their children. The Senate will make the corresponding decision during the day.

From Wednesday to January 10, only five people from two households can meet privately in Hamburg. Larger families can only celebrate together during the Christmas period from December 24-26.
