It was only Thursday that Vice President Lars Schaade announced that the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) was no longer holding regular press conferences. Only in special cases. And that seems to be the case, since the number of plays (R value) is more than 1 again for several days in a row!
After recent positive trends and a drop in infection rate to 0.65, according to RKI data, it is currently 1.07. It is above 1.0 for the third consecutive day.
That means: on average, each infected person causes more than one infection. The RKI says that the reproduction rate must drop below 1 for the epidemic to decrease.
The number of new confirmed infections also increased again: in almost 1,000 so far more than 170,000 cases.
What is the Robert Koch Institute?
The Robert Koch Institute advises the government on the coronavirus crisis and provides figures that health authorities report to the RKI. Messages are sometimes left here, especially on weekends. For this reason, RKI numbers tend to be somewhat lower than, for example, Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, USA.
The independent federal authority currently determines all of our lives with their numbers and studies and the knowledge gained from them.
People with 90 different professions from 50 nations work here. Of the 1,296 employees, 1,224 are based in Berlin and 72 at the Wernigerode branch. The 24/7 Berlin location center only has 150 employees.
“In the current situation, most of all staff are concerned about fighting the Covid 19 virus,” said RKI spokeswoman Susanne Glasmacher.
