It was the shortest Corona summit ever held by the Chancellor and the Prime Minister (60 minutes), but decided measures are more difficult than ever!

Shops, schools and kindergartens are closed from Wednesday until at least January 10. Chancellor Angela Merkel (66, CDU) then with a slightly hoarse voice: “We are obliged to act and we are acting now.”

Finance Minister and Vice Chancellor Olaf Scholz (62, SPD): “The virus does not celebrate a quiet Christmas.”

BILD documents the ten most important dos and don’ts for now.

1. Retail must close!

Starting Wednesday, all stores and weekly markets that DO NOT sell food will close. Stay open: Pickup and delivery services, beverage stores, health food stores, baby, medical and animal stores, pharmacies, drugstores, opticians, hearing aid acousticians, service stations, car and bicycle workshops, banks, post offices, dry cleaners, laundries, newspaper sales, Christmas tree sales and wholesaling.

2. Christmas only in the closest family circle!

Contact restrictions (maximum five people from two households, not including children up to 14 years old) remain in effect.

December 24-26 only. Celebrations in the “closest family circle” are allowed. These are: spouses, civil partners and partners in a civil partnership, heterosexual relatives, siblings, nieces / nephews and members of your household (see below).

3. Hair salons have to close!

Hair salons must close, cosmetic studios, massage practices, and tattoo studios remain closed. Only medically necessary services (physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy, foot care) are possible.

4. Firecrackers forbidden on New Year’s Eve!

Bangers and rockets cannot be sold, remaining stock cannot be lit in public (only allowed in the garden).

5. Meetings forbidden!

At Christmas and New Year’s Eve people are NOT allowed to gather in the streets and squares!

6. Prohibition of alcohol in the open air!

It is forbidden to drink alcohol in public from December 16 to January 10 (also at the mulled wine stands!). Infractions are fined. Pubs / restaurants can deliver more.

7. Schools and daycare must close!

Schools and kindergartens are closed from December 16 to January 10. Lessons are only taught online, compulsory schooling is suspended. An emergency occupation should relieve parents if necessary.

8. Singing is prohibited in church!

Churches, synagogues and mosques can only open if a minimum distance of 1.5 meters is maintained and a mask requirement is observed in the square. Singing is prohibited.

9. Curfews at critical points!

At hotspots with more than 200 new people infected per 100,000 residents per week, stricter curfews will be applied and visitors to nursing homes can only enter with a negative corona test (see chart).

10. Companies should give away vacations!

If possible, companies should introduce company holidays before January 10 or send their employees to the head office.
