According to the Emsland district, 75 out of 170 nuns at the Franciscan Sisters monastery in Thuine tested positive for the corona virus. The municipality has quarantined the site.

It is not yet clear how the virus reached the religious community. Unlike other orders, the Franciscan Sisters do not live in isolation. They run a nursing home, a boarding school for children, a vocational school (BBS) and the Antoniusschule. According to the district, two students tested positive for Corona. One of the infected nuns teaches on the BBS. The health department is now investigating the contacts.

School previously affected by corona cases

In the Antonius school there were already cases of crown in children before the outbreak in the monastery, said the superior general, Sister Maria Cordis Reiker, the NDR in Lower Saxony. “We still don’t have an overview of how the schools will continue, everything keeps changing,” Reiker said.

Test results of 160 employees are pending

Meanwhile, the test results of 160 monastery employees who work in the kitchen, the office or the cleaning department are still pending. In the monastery, the infected now lived in the so-called mother house, where they were also allowed to dine together, the Superior General said. That makes dealing with the outbreak easier. Most of the infected sisters belong to the corona risk group due to their age. However, so far, the course of the disease has been mild and no one has to be treated in the hospital, says Sister Reiker. The sisters who tested negative are all staying in the convent’s guest house.
