Crown crisis in Germany: new death record

The RKI recorded 1,188 new deaths in 24 hours, a new record. In addition, 31,849 new infections were reported. But the RKI assumes that the actual numbers could be even higher.

The number of reported deaths related to the coronavirus has reached a new record. In one day, 1,188 new deaths were reported to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) by German health authorities.

In addition, 31,849 new infections were reported. The previous high of 1,129 new deaths was reached on December 30. Among new infections recorded within 24 hours, the highest value was reported on December 18, at 33,777, but this included 3,500 late reports.

Clarity only in mid-January?

When interpreting the number of cases, it should also be noted that in the weeks around Christmas and the new year, fewer people went to the doctor, fewer samples were taken and fewer laboratory tests were performed, according to the RKI. “This may have resulted in less evidence of pathogens being reported to responsible health authorities.”

Information for the seven-day incidence should also be evaluated with caution, until reliable figures are available for seven individual days. The RKI assumes that the notification data on the occurrence of the infection cannot be reused until the end of the following week or the beginning of the following week, as stated upon request. According to Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) on January 17, clarity about the infection process should be obtained after the holidays.

Differences between federal states

The number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants (incidence of seven days) reported to health authorities in seven days was 136.5 in the morning. Its previous high was reached on December 22 at 197.6.

The differences between the federal states are huge: Saxony had the highest incidences with 297.6 and Thuringia with 256.9. Bremen had the lowest value with 73.5. The RKI has counted 1,866,887 infections detected with Sars-CoV-2 in Germany since the beginning of the pandemic. The total number of people who died with or with a proven Sars-CoV-2 infection increased to 38,795.

Hamburg rushes forward

To obtain the high number of infections in the period, the federal states had agreed with the federal government a stricter closure. It is limited to the end of January. The speed at which resolutions are implemented in state law is different.

Hamburg was the first federal state to enforce stricter crown regulation at midnight. Consequently, hamburgers will have to further restrict their contacts from Friday. Members of a household can only meet one person in another household. So far, contacts have been limited to five people from a maximum of two households. Unlike before, there are no exceptions for children anymore. In neighboring Lower Saxony, the two-person contact restriction should only apply from Sunday, in Schleswig-Holstein from Monday.

More deliveries from BioNTech

The federal states today receive a new shipment of the BioNTech corona vaccine. They should receive a total of almost 668,000 doses of vaccination. Delivery must go directly from the manufacturer Biontech to the 27 delivery centers in the countries. The most populous federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia receives the largest share with 141 375 cans. Bremen gets the smallest share with 4,875 cans. Delivery was announced on this scale.
